BAAGwas started in 1996 with a small number of parents getting together and deciding to meet monthly. At that time the group was called Bendigo Autism Family Support Group (BAFSG). We had children who had been diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, and found that we shared feelings of isolation and frustration at the lack of local Autism-specific services. We also found great comfort in meeting others who could share our joy when a child gained a new and often hard-earned skill.
Group members often expressed relief at those early meetings, at being able to talk with other parents who understood their situation. This is still one of the most valuable aspects of BAAG. BAAG has grown steadily, with new families and supportive professionals becoming involved in a range of activities. We are an informal group and welcome anyone who has an interest in ASDs.
It's our vision that one day this region will be able to offer a Regional Autism Centre. This centre will be a place where families and professionals can go to access information on Autism, and a place where families are able to ensure that all their Autism-based needs are heard and addressed in a coordinated fashion. For this to happen, we need local families to connect and become one voice. Bendigo Autism Asperger Group (BAAG) provide an opportunity for families and professionals to come together to share their journey into the world of Autism. Together we can support each other and advocate for those whom we love.
Our Aims Include:
Providing support to individuals and their families.
Sharing information and resources.
Networking with other organisations to provide support/services for people affected by Autism or Asperger's Syndrome.
Raising the profile of ASDs in the Bendigo region.
Support Offered:
Opportunities for individuals to meet others with an ASD.
Social gatherings for parents over a “cuppa” or a meal.
Speakers addressing topics of interest to the group.
